ETHICS IN ONLINE JOURNALISM

From my point of view, the ethics in the online journalism are the same of the traditional media, but applicated in this digital support.
Because every journalist have to be honest and they don't have to copy other published information if they don't say who is the author of the recopilated information.

It is important too, refusing gifts or money but for example, economic journalists are awarer that online journalists in that topic, because economic informations can influence in the market, and for that reasons, entreprises or factories, enjoy giving gifts to journalist in order to they write interested pieces of news.

The text talk too about telling the truth, but obviously, this is the basic rule in every kind of journalist, and for toelling the truth it is important to check the information in order to be sure that you have objective information.

If we centre the point in blogs, there are a bit problem... there are people who write blogs but they aren't journalists... so... have they to follow the journalistic ethics when they write in their blog?
From my point of view the perfect situation would be when they follow the rules and they write truth information, checked information and they write who is the author of information no-maked for them.

But it is important to know the lay, and be sensitive with the victims of the dramas, and avoid been yellow press, generating pain in other people in order to increase the visits.

And finaly, I find very important for bloggers, writing down their blogs about waht kind of blog it is. If t is and opinion blog, objective blog... etc.

Weblogs and Journalism

Prophecies on the Internet and Journalism
The big picture is that the internet did not bring about revolutionizing impact on journalistic communication that many had hoped and perhaps even more feared.

At first, new media form imitated traditional media before developing their own generic features. Weblogs appear to represent perhaps the first genre with a genuinely web-born format, and its key characteristic is the hyperlinks.

Features and Technology of Weblogs
The key aspects of blogginf are personality, intimacy, communality and specific. Blogs are not just technical applications, and bloggers perceive themselves as part of a community that share values, rituals and language.

A typology of journalistic weblogs:

A) CITIZEN BLOGS: JOURNALISTIC WEBLOGS WRITTEN BY THE PUBLIC OUTSIDE THE MEDIA

the population may adopt some roles: media comentators, specialized writers, amateur reporters... they monitor the work of professional media online and offline to highlight under-covered stories, expose errors or bias in reporting, and to critize poor arguments in editorials and columns. But it is obvious that citizen-blog reporters do not possess the resources and standards of professional journalism.
Some authors stress the fact that most news-related blog content is based on commentary stories produced by professional media. Tat bloggers are called "parasitics" to journalism.

B)AUDIENCIE BLOGS: JOURNALISTIC WEBLOGS WRITTEN BY THE PUBLIC WITHIN THE MEDIA
A space for audience blogs may promote a feeling of community mong readers, and this will improve brand loyalty and trust.
Thi type of journalistic weblog still needs much more experience exploring its potencial in order to assess its benefits and drawbacks for the media -audience relationship.

C) JOURNALIST BLOGS: JOURNALISTIC WEBLOGS WRITTEN BY JOURNALIST OUTSIDE MEDIA INSTITUTIONS
In this blogs, journalists can expand on issues and points of view that do not get into the media journalists work for. Weblogs allow complete editorial freedom and enable the journalist to adopt a much more interpretative or even opinative position in comparison to the standars of mainstream media. News media companies are not always comfortable with this trend. But they are several journalists who write weblogs as a parallel activity to theis media work without any troubles.

D)MEDIA BLOGS: JOURNALISTIC WEBLOGS WRITTEN BY JOURNALISTS WHITHIN MEDIA INSTITUTIONS
In this case, editorial control and stylistic requirements may not be as strict as in the news, but editors usually oversee the weblog entries as the are posted.

There are three different approaches to weblog use within the media
  • Special events coverage: these blogs are born and die with the newsworthiness of the event
  • Opinion columna: the limits of paper and air time do not exist, and media can offer more permanent featured writers than they can offline.
  • Newa commentary: in these blogs, correspondents or specialized journalists elaborate on the stories they produce for the main outlet, and publish notes and reflection
It appears that weblogs have created a new genre in institutionalized media journalism. The author is more visible and present in the story, and the style is more persona. Journalists tend to correct themselves transparently and quickly, reacting to reader'r comments.

Significance og Weblogs to Journalism

  1. Many blogs openly challenge institutional or professional journalism by offering either competing or complementary about news and current affairs.
  2. Weblogs threaten to expose journalism at one of its weakest points, its lack of personal contact with readers.
  3. Weblogs question the ownership of journalism on the level of profession.
  4. Weblogs have not been something outside institutional media and its journalism. Several news media have included various kinds of weblogs in their online sites.

The typology proposed here can be an useful tool for researches who wish to explore:
  • the exent to which the challenges posed by weblogs to journalism as a profession are actually redefining the profession
  • the influence of institutional contexts in the shaping of blogging as a journalistic genre
  • the tensions between editorial control and subjectivity in different kinds of journalistic blogs.

Personal opinion about "An Inmature Medium" from Ramón Salaverria

From my point of view, I consider Septembre 11 facts really important for on line press development. There were some problems that journalists couldn't do anything in order to improve them, as connection problems, minutes after the attacks.

I am really satisfied with the consolidation of new formats in order to have more complete information, more dinamic and interactive datas. And that consolidation, separated traditional format to online press formats, and internet press had more autonomy than traditional media.
But I think that don't verified if one information is true, and don't contrast some information about one fact, is a very serious offense to the public (who have confidence in that medium,) and to other journalists (who do their job correctly). I consider checking information is very much important than being the first in publishing breaking news.

An inmature Medium, from Ramón Salaverría

This report want to summarize the article from Ramón Salaverría about the role that internet newspapers played in the 11S terrorist attacks.
The objetc of the intestigation are 18 online newspapers from different countries. About Spain, Salaverría will analyse elpais.es and elmundo.es because they have the biggest number of visitors in our country.

News Relevance of September 11 events

In that attack, more than 3,000 people dead, there were thousand of injured people, the most significant area of Manhatan was destroyed, the Pentagon was damaged and four commercial aircrafts were hijacked and crashed. These facts cause an act of mass-mediated terrorism, and the factors that contributed to magnify this media impact were the space and the time factor.

About the space, Twin Towers were the most famous urban landscapes, and Pentagon evokes secrecy and invulnerability. So, both places assured a maximun exposure for the media. For that reason, hundreds of journalists and cameras can access to these areas very quickly.

The time factor was relevant too. The time which the attacks started 8.46 a.m. in New York, 13.46 GMT; allowed maximun live media coverage. In addition, the rhythm of development of events produced a frantic information beat and this contributed to maintain the atonishment and the visual attraction at all times.

WWW became the platform which users massively rushed to search information. According to google, during the two following hours the start of the attacks, an average of 6,000 searches of the acronym CNN were performed every minute. 80% of 500 most searched words of that day in google were related to the terrorist attacks.

The Weakness of Online Newapapers on the News Coverage of Septembre 11 events

A few minutes after the news of the first attack broadcast, Internet had to respod to a sudden multiplication of traffic, and many online newspapers (the most famous) collapsed. The smaller media offered more satisfactory technological performance to the public's information demands than the larger media.

In addition, the spreading of news without a clear verification was a general trend on a good proportion of digital publications. After analysing the selectionated media, we discover that on September 11 in response to the information needs of the public, editors took the decision of giving priority to the last minute news, before data could be verified. Journalists understood that the evanescent of character of digital media as a justification for impunity and for that reason, wasn't neccessary to correct errors in the next publication. (Click here to saw elpais.es 11s error information)

So, in conclusion, online media journalists tended to give more importance to speed than to acuracy, and they adopted some sense of impunity justified by this need for speed.

If we talk about de own identity of the online media, it is important to emphasize that the most part of these media modified their layout and their character in order to be the first media in publishing breaking news. The online media which mantain the standart layout, didn't publish any background piece at all homepages.

Strenghts of the Online Newspapers

September 11 events proved that the Internet press has its particular character and its particular audience. And after that fact, the news web sites increased very much the users visit.
Paradoxically, that growth in audience rating occured when online media had economic problems because advertisment in that web sites reduced drastically.

In addition, it will be an important development of multimedia information, becase the web was used as a platform to offer the last minute news and also as an archive for providing context and background data with news content in images, sounds, multimedia products, interactive infographics... that television and radio didn't have. These actions, aided to configurated new journalistic formats for the web.
